Problem was
Running Mandriva 2008.1. Install worked ok, but on rebooting kernel panic when probing Ethernet port.
Solution was :-
1/ Disable Ethernet in Bios
2/ Boot now works OK
3/ Put alternative kernel 2.6.24.7-tmb-desktop-2mdv from the Mandriva online ‘contrib’ sources on USB Flash stick 4/cd to the Flash stick and Install the new kernel with ‘urpmi kernel-2.6.24.7-tmb-desktop-2mdv.i586.rpm’ command 5/ Shutdown and re-enable Ethernet in Bios 6/ Reboot. All works OK
